Cottage Pie Recipe

A cottage pie recipe is very similar to shepherds pies recipe. They are both a filling of minced meat, vegetables and gravy with a topping of mashed potatoes. The difference between the two pies is that a cottage pie is made using beef mince and the shepherds pie is made using lamb mince meat. Both are very delicious and both are a very traditional British dish. There are however different methods of similar recipes all over the world using both mashed potatoes and meat.

My cottage pie recipe is very simple to make. It tastes wonderful and is very filling and wholesome.

The mashed potatoes were creamy and smooth and the filling was very tasty indeed.

If you r are vegan or vegetarian you can see my vegetarian shepherds pie recipe

Ingredients for Jeenas Cottage Pie Recipe
1 Pack Lean Minced Beef
2 Carrots (diced small)
1 Leek (washed, diced)
4 Mushrooms or 2 Large Mushrooms (diced)
Few Drops of Worcestershire Sauce
Pinch Salt and Pepper
Cup of Beef Gravy
4-5 Potatoes worth freshly cooked mashed potatoes

How to make a Cottage Pie Recipe

Cook the carrots in some water until they soften.

Drain the carrots and keep the water to make the gravy with later.

Pour a little oil into a large pan and lightly cook the leeks for a few minutes.

Add teh carrots and mushrooms.

Make a thick gravy from some of the carrots water and pour into the pan of vegetables.

Your gravy should be thin enough to cook the mince beef in but still thick enough to hold the mashed potatoes on top. If you make the gravy too thin too much will seep up the sides of the pie, you want a little to flow out but not too much.

Add the mince beef to the vegetables.

Chop at the beef and stir well simmering all the time.

Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper, stir in the Worcestershire sauce.

Cook for about 10-20 minutes with a lid on until beef is cooked through and softened.

Pour the cottage pie mixture into a square shaped pie oven dish.

Have ready your fresh mashed potatoes, spoon on the mashed potatoes little by little.

Smooth over the beef evenly then make a criss cross pattern on top of the mashed potatoes with a fork.

Place under a hot grill until golden brown all over.

You can cook the cottage pie in a hot oven until golden brown if you do not have access to a grill, it will take longer in time though.

Serve your fresh homemade cottage pie recipe with chips and a vegetable of your choice or eat it in a bowl as it is.

This looks AWESOME! I love both cottage and shepherd's pie. I sometimes make it as a filling for jacket potatoes. I had it that way in Scotland and I fell in love with it!
