With step by step instructions of how to bake a chocolate cake this is a very easy recipe to cook.

You can eat the cake as a round chocolate sponge cake or you can slice around the edges for more of a clean cut square cake.

This choclate cake recipe can be baked as a fully indulgent chocolate cake or even a chocolate marble cake, Chef baked this chocolate cake with a slight marble effect o and it tasted delicious.

4oz Caster Sugar

How to cook an easy chocolate cake recipe

Using a Whisk blend together the margarine, vanilla essence and sugar until light and fluffy.

Separate the egg yolks and egg whites.

Add the two egg yolks to the butter and sugar cake mixture along with half of the self raising flour, mix well.

You will be left with a thick textured cake mixture.

Add the rest of your flour, mix well.

Take a small pan and fill with water just under half way.

Warm the water up and simmer.

Place a little bowl on top of the pan and place your chocolate pieces into the bowl.

The chocolate will gently melt.

In a separate mixing bowl whisk up the two egg white until is starts to froth.

Add 1 Tbsp of powdered sugar and whisk until the egg whites become thick and have firm peaks when you lift the whisk from the mixture.

The chocolate should be melted by now.

Take the chocolate off the heat.

Take the whipped up egg white mixture and pour it into the cake batter mixture.

Fold the egg whites into the cake mixture.

Fold by moving the spoon over and under the mixture rather than just stiring in circle motion.

Make sure the egg whites are thoroughly mixed in well.

You will be left with a cake mixture that is pale and a lot more loose in texture.

Pour the melted chocolate into the cake mixture.

For a full chocolate cake mix the melted chocolate well, for a slight marble effect only mix the chocolate a little, for a full marble effect only stir the spoon across once or twice.

Pour into a greased and floured cake tin.

Very gently make the chocolate cake even with a spoon.

Place into a hot oven at 175C for 30-40 minutes depending on the heat of your oven.

To check if the chocolate cake is cooked insert a skewer through the centre of the cake, if it comes out clean it is fully cooked.

When the chocolate cake is cooked leave it to cool a little in its tin.

Take the cake from the tin and leave to cool on a rack.

If you desire slice the edges of the cake to produce a clean cut square chocolate cake.

To make the butter cream just take a little vanilla essence, corn starch, butter and keep adding enough powdered sugar until the butter cream is of the sweetness that you enjoy.

You can add cocoa powder or melted chocolate to this mixture if you like.

Slice the cake in half and fill with butter cream.

Always make sure that the chocolate cake is fully cooled before slicing and adding any creams.

Hi Jeena! I have been following your blog and I especially liked the pictures you posted of the procedures. :)

Btw, I tried making this chocolate cake. It turned out yummy and moist. However, I used cake flour and so I had to double the recipe so to have another layer. Also, the butter filling did not turn out right. It easily melted and it tasted only of butter. What could have I done wrong?

I would like to do this again and I hope by then it would be better. It was my first time to bake a cake and I just did as I could not resist your pictures and it looked really easy to do.

Oh! Do you have a ganache recipe? Instead of confectioner's sugar, I was hoping to cover the cake with chocolate ganache.

Thank you. :)

Hi Jeena,

I am going to try your chocolate cake recipe today. Though I love the way you post all the pictures and make everything so clear, please think about having a print-version of your recipes too.

I like to print and file the recipes that have turned out great and it is difficult to print with all the pictures. The pictures are great for first time trial, but subsequent attempts work well with just the print-version :)

Thanks,
Yamini

Hi
The cake looks delicious. Can I use all purpose flour instead? If so How much baking pwd/soda to add?
Can you please tell me?

Chef Jeena said...

Hi there,

I have never baked this cake using all purpose flour. If I didi I would use 1 tsp of baking powder and 1/2 tsp of bicarbonate of soda.

I would love to hear hwo it goes.

Thanks, Jeena.

Hi Jeena,

What's the difference btwn baking soda and baking powder? Can I just add only baking powder alone if I am using all purpose flour?
